Backyard Oahu - Oahu's Hiking Trails

Weekly Trail Picture

An unusual look at the island of Oahu, this view point is offshore of Kualoa Beach Park atop Mokolii Island ("Chinaman's Hat"). As the morning sun rises, Waikane Valley, pyramidial Puu Ohulehule, and the sheer Moo Kapu o Haloa containing prominent Puu Kanehoalani (not pictured, to the right) come into view. Mokolii Island itself is not actually a self-standing island born from the ocean floor but is a branch of the Moo Kapu o Haloa Ridge. A formation known as a sea stack, Mokolii Island is the sea-eroded remnant of the ridge's breakaway headland. There is a near-vertical trail, accessible by kayak, to the top of the 206-foot-tall island.
