Oahu Hiking Trails
Each trail is listed once, alphabetically, using its more commonly known name
(e.g. Keaiwa Heiau Loop is listed as Aiea Loop). Alternate names are parentheticalized.
Dashes (-) indicate that particular trail feature has not been rated yet.

- Trail
- Trail name - Sometimes trails are known by various names. Therefore, the
names used here follow this priority: 1) most widely known or commonly used, 2)
official name (if any), 3) geographical name. Use the site search box if you don't
see the trail you're looking for here. NOTE: For listing purposes, the "puu" has
been left off trail names as applicable.
- Distance
- Length - This is the real distance, in one direction, of the trail from
trailhead to terminus. Typically, the value is map-measured by physical or computerized
means. For non-loop trails, this is not the roundtrip length: double the
distance if you plan to return the same way.
- Elevation change
- Hi/lo - Difference between high and low point of trail usu. the
trailhead and terminus for most trails or the highest and lowest point for
loop trails.
- Total - Total elevation change adding all climbs in one
direction only.
- Difficulty Ratings
- min/min - minimal: usu. a flat walk at "best", a steep walk at "worst"
- nov/low - novice/low: appropriate for hikers who are novices, need to get into shape,
or new to Oahu.
- int/mod - intermediate/moderate: appropriate for intermediate hikers - those who are
not strangers to hiking on Oahu. Novices who are getting a good feel for Oahu trails
may progress to this level.
- adv/high - advanced/high: only strong, advanced Oahu hikers should progress
to this level. Trails which are tricky to navigate and require increased situational
awareness may warrant this rating or higher.
- exp/ext - extreme: experts only, esp. those who can handle overly narrow, vertical, or
precipitous cliffs.
- Skill level is a measure of personal abilities required to negotiate the
trail. This is a mixture of technical skill (e.g. knowing how to traverse tricky,
narrow, or steep sections requiring four-point climbs/descents) and pure physical
strength and endurance.
- Danger level is a measure of exposure to and likelihood of a severe injury
or death if you fail to negotiate the path properly, such as in a fall, misstep, or
other mistake. Remember: there is always some form of this exposure on every trail
on Oahu. This value merely judges the immediacy of such injury (i.e. the
possibility of arresting a fall and avoid serious injury).
- Terrain
- coastal - unless a paved or dirt road, this trail type tends to be
rocky and often undefined with no exact path to follow. Despite no major gain
in elevation, boulders may require careful vertical climbs/descents. It
maintains a close proximity to the ocean and therefore highly susceptible to
dangerous waves.
- contour - graded trail without dramatic ups or downs - may have occasional
switchbacks in steep areas
- hillside - trail tends to be hilly in nature, but ascents/descents are not as
dramatic as a typical ridge trail. May include graded trails
- ridge-g - graded ridgeline: may involve a significant number of switchbacks
- ridge-u - ungraded ridgeline: footpath generally remains on top of the
natural ridgeline and follows every change in elevation
- ridge-s - ridge spur: very sharp ascent, tends to be short in distance but
difficult in steepness and footing.
- stream - majority of hike involves numerous stream crossings, remains parallel
but very close to, or hikes in the stream bed. Footpath (if any) tends to be
more natural, overgrown/boulder-strewn, and obscure.
- switchbacks - usu. ascent up the side of a ridge or cliff with the intention of
reaching the ridgeline
- valley - other than a stream trail, usually involves more contoured or graded
footpaths sometimes up and away from streams. Ascents may be a little steeper.
Often involves at least one or more stream crossings, but less than five.
Typically of a more constructed nature, but not necessarily.
