Tips for Hiking Oahu's Backyard
This is up to you and how much of a fashion statement you'd like to make!
However, these are the assumptions that I always make. First, I'm going
to get wet from muddy trails or rain. I dislike rock-hopping across
streams and will just walk right through them (provided they aren't
torrential, of course). Second, it can get steamy-hot in the valleys and
where thick vegetation has retained morning dew, releasing it in the
mid-day heat. Third, I've ripped clothing on vegetation and fences along
narrow ridges (Makua Rim East). Fourth, I waste too much energy on foot
slippage due to lack of traction. And lastly, my legs and hands are going
to get scraped up and/or muddy.
The solution for me
is:
Shorts - I use shorts because I run extremely hot. The heavy humidity doesn't help cool you off
especially if you're wearing long pants. Unfortunately, shorts don't protect your legs from scrapes!
(NOTE: If you don't mind wearing them, above-the-knee gaiters will protect your legs from the majority of scrapes.
Knee-pads can help during falls/rock climbs.)
Short-sleeved T-shirt - Again, I run very hot while hiking. Be careful of the sun exposure on the dry hikes!
Suspenders - There's a lot of weight on my hips from the waistpack and supplies.
Nike Sharks or high-top hiking boots -
Depending on the trail type and climbing needed, I'll use the Sharks
(football cleats really work!) for squishy mud-climbs and the standard boots for
road-walks, dryer graded ridges, etc. Sorbothane inserts help
alleviate the repeated shocks of your steps on your feet, legs, and spine.
I use the poor-man's substitute: double socks
Gloves - Rocks and vegetation can do a number to your fingers and palms. Some sort of
thick animal hide is recommended.
Cap (optional) - Great for scooping up some of that brisk
Lepto-water to cool off your head!
Multi-pocket jacket (optional) - Warmth for windy or night hikes.
