| A wooded trail, this hike provides few vantage spots for views, but its abundance of trees is shady and soothing. This is one of a number of trails which provides access to Puu Lanihuli. |

Description: Benchmarks: Waolani (1,414 feet) Puu Napuumaia (1,870 feet) What to Expect: Trailhead Location: Above and behind Kamehameha Schools is a closed maintenance access road (one of two) which leads to a water tank. Along the left side of this 1,500-foot road, the pine trees begin to thicken in density. Enter at any point and continue along the narrow, but relatively-level, ridge. The trail becomes obvious as the Kapalama ridgeline forms and breaks away from obscurity. Accessing the Trail: The trail begins on property wholly owned by the private trust of the final descendant of old Hawaii's royal blood line: Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. The entire Kapalama Heights area is guarded, patrolled, and requires permission to enter. The maintenance road to the trail begins at a turn-around loop at the terminus of Girls Road. This is behind the Keopuolani-Uka Building at the school's highest point. After passing the main guard shack (Makuakane Gate), proceed on Ke Ala Mano to Bishop Drive, then left on Princess Drive. Keep right on Princess Drive until it converges with Girls Road. Property/Access: Trailhead: Kamehameha Schools Bernice Pauahi Bishop Estate (KSBE) Dangers/Other Considerations: Hunting: A brief stretch of the deepest (and highest) section of trail skirts the northwestern boundary of the Nuuanu Public Hunting Area. This is about a 0.4-mile section, from Napuumaia to the loop's turn-back junction. (The boundary continues along this ridge all the way to Puu Lanihuli.) This shouldn't pose any threat, but be cautious nonetheless. |
