Aihualama

Trailhead

A short, graded hike which switchbacks from Manoa Valley up to the trail arena of Pauoa Flats. This is used mostly as a connector trail to other destinations.

Description:
This 1.3-mile trail is used mostly as hiking version of a highway on-ramp. This is the best way for Manoa Falls visitors to increase their workout intensity if they desire more exertion while spending a day at the falls. Conversely, this is a way for Tantalus residents/visitors to reach Manoa Falls.

Built along the Manoa flank of Na Ala Hele's Honolulu Mauka trail system, the Aihualama Trail connects the Manoa Falls trail at its valley-floor terminus (approx. elev. 1,100-feet) with a junction (elev. 1,600-feet) along the Pauao Flats Trail high above Tantalus. From this junction, hikers can head left (downhill) to several other Na Ala Hele trails, including the Puu Ohia peak, or right (uphill) to the Nuuanu Valley overlook and the unofficial, restricted, and ungraded trail to the Konahuanui peaks.

What to Expect:
The sometimes-grassy/sometimes-muddy trail is etched into the mountain-side and works its way uphill. It takes you through two distinct bamboo forests and small thickets of various other types of vegetation. While you do get occasional glimpses of territory fronting Manoa Valley including Diamond Head don't expect any serious vantage points for views. Do expect, however, to see a variety of botanical features and constant vegetation around you.

If you're ascending you'll know you're closing in on the Pauoa Flats Trail junction when you complete the stretch of 14 switchbacks and emerge into a thick, tall stand of bamboo.

Trailhead Location:
The trail is marked by an official DLNR metal sign posted at both ends. The lower trailhead is on the left side (mauka) at the terminus end of the Manoa Falls Trail about 15 steps before the waterfall. The upper trailhead is on the right side of the Pauoa Flats Trail before the "big red tree" as you gently ascend toward the Nuuanu lookout.

Accessing the Trail:
Use either the Manoa Falls Trail in Manoa Valley or the Pauao Flats Trail above Tantalus.
